Ajanta

There is so much to say about the rock cut caves at Ajanta that a single blog would be in sufficient  to describe its grandeur. But nevertheless I will put down some of the facts for completeness sake.

The Ajanta caves were build over a period ranging from 2nd century BC to 600 BC under the patronage of Satavahana and Vakataka dynasties. The caves contain very fine paintings and sculptures depicting the Jataka tales and life of Buddha.  The Ajanta caves passed into oblivion when Buddhism declined in India, only to be re-discovered by an English officer named John Smith who happened to accidentally find the caves while on a hunting expedition.

For a detailed information on Ajanta caves please refer this article by the Archaeological survey of India. (http://asi.nic.in/asi_monu_whs_ajanta.asp)
